August 01: Performance Friday: From July 31 to August 2, the Tallahassee Ballet is showing previous performances for free. This weekend’s option is Pour Dix, from their 2016 An Evening of Music & Dance which was performed at FSU’s Opperman Music Hall. Each weekend in August will feature a different performance.

The Teen Book Club is meeting virutally at 2:30 P.M. This is hosted by the Leon County Library. The book to be discussed is The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. This is for teens only.

The Cabin Fever Drive In Light Show, at the Tallahassee Fair Grounds. Tickets must be purchased in advance and are priced $12.50-$50. There are two shows at night.

First show: Gates open at 7:30 PM and the show begins at 9:00 PM

Second show: gates open at 9:45 and the show begins at 11:00 PM.

August 03: Virtual Job Skills Workshop at the Leon County Library. This is an hour long course that explains how to use the Learning Express Database in order to access the Career Prep, Adult Core Skills, Software Skills, Resume help and Job Accelerator. This beings at 7:00 P.M.

August 04: The Fiction/Non-Fiction Book Club of Leon County Library is having a virtual meeting. It begins at 6:30 P.M. and the book to be discussed is "The Sympathizer" by Viet Thanh Nguyen.

Madison Social (in person and virtual) Trivia. The subject is Taylor Swift (celebrating her new album release). Registration begins at 6:30 and play begins at 7:00 PM.

August 05: Pink Narcissus is celebrating National Oyster Day by having a pop-up event featuring Designs by Francie and her hand made oyster shells, giveaways, and more. The event begins at 3:00 PM and ends at 6:00 PM

August 06: There’s a virtual candidate forum from the Big Bend Environmental Forum (a coalition of 15 conservation, community, smart growth, and sustainable organizations). Some of the candidates include the Leon County Commission and Tallahassee City Commission. Citizens may submit questions about the environment, energy, sustainability and growth management for consideration. The stream begins at 6:00 PM.

August 07: Performance Friday from the Tallahassee Ballet


August 08: The Virtual Pop-Up Book Club is taking place at 10:00 A.M. The book being discussed is Educated by Tara Westover.


August 11: The Tallahassee Senior Center Foundation’s annual Art Potpourri has moved online. Art may be purchased through the links provided. Online art classes are also being offered by TSC. Art Potpourri ends August 31st.


The OneBlood (aka Big Red) Bus will be at Tallahassee Nurseries for blood donations. They’ll arrive at 11:30 AM and will stay until 4:30 P.M. OneBlood is also accepting plasma from recovered Covid-19 patients (must schedule an appointment for this, not a drop-in option).

August 15: Annie Get Your Glue Gun, the crafters’ meet-up hosted virtually by the Leon County Library will meet at 1:00 P.M.

August 16: Young (at heart) Book Club is meeting virtually at 3:00 PM. The book for discussion is Set Your Free by Jeff Ross

 
Mystery BookClub Tallahassee

August 20: The Mystery Book Club is meeting virtually, beginning at 6:30 PM. The book of choice is any book featuring African mysteries or books written by/for African Americans. There is a suggested list here: African and African American Mysteries.

The Grove Museum’s second Grove Community Book Club is discussing Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God. One of the main topics for discussion is how the novel relates to African American lives in 1930s Florida. Copies of “Their Eyes Were Watching God” are available at the cash register at Midtown Reader with a 10% discount for participants. RSVP for a free ticket here. The discussion begins at 6:00 PM.

August 21: Performance Friday from the Tallahassee Ballet

 

August 22: Fennec Foxes are still visiting at the Tallahassee Museum (until September 30). Admission is free to $12.

August 25: The Venvi Art Gallery is hosting a virtual tour of Leon Hicks’ show, “Aligned.” Hicks is an expert printmaker, dedicated educator, and patron to the arts. His show will run until the end of the month.

The Leon County Library is virtually hosting local experts and grassroots activists who wish to discuss restoring voting rights in Florida, dependent on the outcome of Florida’s amendment 4 and the court cases around it. This is meant to be a civil discussion and to help facilitate resources. It begins at 6:30 PM.

August 28: Performance Friday from the Tallahassee Ballet

The Junior League of Tallahassee is having their 4th annual golf tournament at Southwood Golf Club. Teams of four can play (for $375) beginning at 8:30 AM. There are different levels of sponsorship available.

August 29: Retrofit Records is celebrating Record Store Day, beginning at 12:00/Noon. There will be special releases and food/drink on the premise.
