Susa’s Transformations is based on American poet Anne Sexton’s contemporary interpretation of Grimm’s fairy tales. Musical inspiration is taken from classical, jazz, and popular styles. The opera will be presented in Englis with subtitles available.

“TRIGGER WARNINGS: Transformations is a bold opera composed by Conrad Susa and based on a collection of confessional poetry found in Anne Sexton’s 1971 book of poetry by the same name. It was composed in 1973, a time when standard operatic stories entered a fairly experimental phase of unorthodox poetic sources and creative orchestration. You will experience a different, more modernized orchestra with electronic instrumentation and a lot of jazz influence. The stories are presented in fragments through a reconstructed version of several fairytales from the Brothers Grimm. This opera explores the very darkest sides of human nature in a variety of ways and as such may not be appropriate for audience members under the age of 18. (Please note that this production does contain sexual language, sexual assault and incest, weapons onstage, light flashes, and smoke/haze.)”
