Things to Do This Weekend (September 27-29, 2019) in Tallahassee

HIGHLIGHTS




Friday, September 27: Goodwood Museum and Gardens is hosting “Sham,” a live-action 1920s comedy that takes place throughout the Goodwood Main House. The audience is restricted to 25 people per play and tickets are $25.

Sugaray Rayford is performing at the Bradfordville Blues Club starting at 9:00 PM. Tickets can be purchased online.

Friday Night’s Block Party at College Town begins at 5:00 PM, the musical guest is the Velcro Pygmies. The event is free.



Saturday, September 28: Farmer’s Market’s in town start in the morning at 9 or 10 AM.

The Saving Wakulla Springs Overland Tour begins at 8:00 AM. It’s being led by Jim Stevenson, a Florida springs expert, who has seven stops planned. The tour costs $10-18 and the money raised will go to Friends of Wakulla Springs State Park.

Pagan Pride Day 2019 is being held at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tallahassee from 12:00 - 8:00 PM. This is a free festival.

The first day of the two-part workshop on Acrylic Painting for Absolute Beginners starts at 10 AM. The second date is October 05. The cost is $50-55 with all materials included.

KCCI (Knight Creative Communities Institute) is holding one of their #Placemaking Week events in Midtown. Using paint, they hope to create a beautiful space. They’re meeting on Thomasville Road in the NAI TALCOR parking lot at 3:00 PM.

There is a SoFar concert in Tallahassee, somewhere in Old Town (off Downtown) at 7:30 PM. Tickets are given via a lottery system and the acts aren’t announced until later. Ticket price is unknown (until the lottery is drawn).

Koly P is performing at the Moon, with doors opening at 10:00 PM. Tickets are $10-30.

Tallahassee Rollergirls (Legiskators vs. Sinators) start their hometown game @ 7:00 PM. This is the last game of the season.


Sunday, September 29: Theatre Tallahassee is presenting “A Coupla White Chicks Sitting Around Talking”, a comedic play. Admission is $15 and begins at 2:00 PM.

FSU Doctoral student Adam Cobb is performing Opus 127 on the organ at St. John’s Episcopal Church. This starts at 3:00 PM and is a free event.

The Crum Box Gastgarden is having their Fifth Annual Sausage Fest from 3:00-8:00 PM. Music, food and drinks will be available for purchase.

All Saints Cinema is presenting "Blue Tarps: Over Six Months After Hurricane Michael". All proceeds from this will go to Innovative Charities of Northwest Florida, Inc. which is helping storm victims of Hurricane Michael. It’s a documentary showcasing what happened six months after the hurricane to people who lived in the path.

Hearth and Soul are hosting ‘Works of Harte: Floral Workshop.’ This watercolor painting class is being led by Alison Fairbrother starting at 2:00 PM. The class costs $55 and materials are included (as well as some snacks and champagne). Reservations are required.

Monday, September 30: IMAX is showing a documentary called Mysteries of China.



Tuesday, October 01: Vinyasa Yoga at the Goodwood Museum from 5:45 to 6:45. The cost is $0-5 (depending on membership) and it’s ‘bring your own mat.’

The Tallahassee Society of the Archaeological Institute of America presents a lecture by Ömür Harmanşah (University of Illinois, Chicago) titled “Isis and the Destruction of Cultural Heritage in Iraq and Syria.” This lecture is in the Fine Arts Building (Auditorium, Room 249) beginning at 8:00 PM.

Studio B has “Beginning Belly Dancing with Aya” starting at 7:30 PM. Each class is $12.

Mid-day Bell Ringing Concerts are part of St. John Episcopal’s Church’s October Musical Series. After the concert, a quick tour and meet and greet occur. Lunch can be purchased at St. John’s Lively Cafe.



Wednesday, October 02: Jim Crozier and Frank Jones are playing in the Lab at Bird’s Aphrodisiac Oyster Shack. They begin at 6:00 PM. Admission is free.

KitchenAble is having a cooking class series titled “Flavors of Vietnam Cooking.” This Wednesday’s class is on Phở. Other than Phở, the menu includes a rice noodle salad, Bahn Xeo or Saigon crepes, and Bánh Khoai Mì Nướng (dessert). The class costs $40 and the meal kit is included. Coffee and water are available on site. Reservations must be made.


Thursday, October 03: Mission San Luis is hosting Dr. Kristin Dutcher Mann. Dr. Mann will give a lecture starting at 6:30. This is the second lecture in a series titled “Soundscapes of a Spanish Mission,” it’s about ‘Music, Dance, and Bells in the Borderlands of the Ibero-American World.’ A reception begins at 6:00 PM and the event is free.

Create! Tallahassee is beginning their Computer Animation Filmmaking coursework, this class ends in December.

Food Truck Thursday, with musical guest Sawmill Jam, starts at 5:30 PM.

Jazz Nights at Level 8 Lounge is till occurring from 8:00 PM. Admission is free.

Opening Night’s presentation of Hiplets Ballerinas starts at 7:30 PM in Ruby Diamond Concert Hall. There is still a small number of seats left for purchase. Tickets are $20 to $35. The ensemble fuses classical pointe technique with African, Latin, hip-hop and urban dance styles.

University Philharmonia begins at 7:30 PM in Opperman Music Hall. Music for this concert includes Beethoven’s Overture to Fidelio, Bloch’s Concerto Grosso No. 1 with Piano Obbligato and, Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8. Admission is free.
